Fan Maintenance Best Practices to Extend Service Life
Cooling fans are often the only moving part in electronic equipment, and their failure can bring down an entire system. These maintenance practices help maximize fan life and system reliability.
1. Keep Air Paths Clean
Dust buildup on blades and guards reduces airflow and unbalances the rotor. Schedule periodic cleaning based on the environment – more often in dusty sites. Use filters where applicable and replace them on schedule.
2. Monitor Speed, Current and Noise
Fan speed (RPM), current and noise are practical health indicators. Rising current at constant speed suggests bearing wear or blockage. Fans with tachometer output allow continuous monitoring; alarm on speed drop to catch problems early.
3. Manage Operating Temperature
Bearing life roughly halves for every 10-15 °C above rated temperature. Improving enclosure ventilation, reducing heat load or upgrading to a higher-airflow fan often costs less than frequent replacements.
4. Replace Proactively in Critical Systems
For equipment with high downtime cost – UPS, telecom, medical – plan replacement based on rated life (typically 30,000-70,000 hours at 40 °C) rather than waiting for failure.
5. Handle Fans Correctly
- Never spin the rotor with compressed air – it can damage bearings and generate voltage.
- Hold the frame, not the wires, during installation.
- Avoid free-fall drops and mechanical shock; check rotation direction after service.
