Five Common Fan Installation Mistakes – and How to Avoid Them

Even a well-selected fan can underperform if installed poorly. These are the mistakes we see most often in customer equipment – and how to avoid them.

1. Ignoring Airflow Direction

Every fan has an airflow direction arrow on the frame. Mounting against the intended path, or mismatching multiple fans in series/parallel, can cut effective airflow dramatically. Confirm direction before final assembly.

2. Creating Air Recirculation

If the exhaust air can loop back to the intake – through gaps, open vents or poorly placed components – cooling capacity is wasted. Use baffles, gaskets and separated intake/exhaust openings to keep the airflow path clean.

3. Over-Tightening or Distorting the Frame

Excessive screw torque can deform plastic frames, causing bearing misalignment, vibration and noise. Follow recommended torque values and use washers where specified.

4. Blocking the Intake or Exhaust

Cables, brackets and filters placed too close to the fan choke airflow. Keep clearance around the fan and verify that grilles and EMI screens are sized for the required airflow, not just for protection.

5. Neglecting Vibration and Resonance

Fans mounted on thin panels can amplify noise through resonance. Use rubber mounts or damping pads, and avoid mounting frequencies that coincide with fan rotation.
